George W. Cullum papers, 1855-1856.

Two letters, 1855 and 1856, from Charleston, S.C., to J.C. Osgood in Troy, N.Y., discussing terms for the dredging of Charleston Harbor. Letter, 12 June 1855 (Charleston, S.C.), to J.C. Osgood (Troy, N.C.), proposing terms of a contract for dredging harbor with Osgood's dredge, re his estimation of the work completed, "the Dredge, under energetic and fearless management, can take up, without difficulty, 500 cubic yards every good day," and advising that time had been lost through inadequate funding and indecisiveness in handling the boat. Letter, 2 June 1856, discussing contract for dredging Moffett's Channel and Charleston harbor, informing Osgood that the contract had been awarded to J.M. Eason & Brothers following Osgood's rejection of the terms offered, and explaining that he was not in a position to assist Osgood in selling his dredge.

Cullum was born in New York City on 25 February 1809, to Arthur and Harriet Sturges Cullum. He was raised in Meadville, Pennsylvania. His father worked as a lawyer and an agent of a land company. Cullum attended the United States Military Academy, from 1 July 1829 to 1 July 1833, when he graduated third in the Class of 1833. He designed the Independent Congregational Church at Meadville and it was built in 1835–1836. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cullum ...
